Learning about puberty, conception, childbirth and relationships

Dear parents/carers,

As part of our science and PSHE curriculum the children will be learning about puberty, conception, childbirth and relationships. Within this, we will be building on last year’s puberty topic and learning and discussing how the male and female body changes and how a baby is made. As well as this, we will be looking at what makes a healthy relationship and what this means at an age appropriate level for the children. Built into this will also be discussions about the influence of social media and how to deal with the pressures that come with this.

This learning will all take place during the week of 18th June. Most of the work will be done in classes but children will also have the opportunity to go into gender groups to ask any questions they might have. We will only be using the correct scientific vocabulary as this is part of the statutory science curriculum.

On Tuesday 12th June at 5:30 pm we will be holding a parent meeting in the school hall where we will show you the slides and resources we will use with the children and give you the opportunity to learn about what we teach the children so you can support this learning at home. We kindly ask that due to the nature of this meeting that the children do not attend which will allow you to ask any questions you might have about what we will be covering.

Please return the slip below by Friday 8th June so we have a clear idea of numbers.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

The Year 6 Team
