Bikeability Cycle Training OPEN TO YEAR 5 AND 6 CHILDREN ONLY

Beechwood Junior School has been chosen as one of a number of schools in this area to receive Bikeability Cycle Training. This training is designed to give children the skills and experience to be able to cycle safely and confidently. It is Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century.

Children enjoy cycling and of course it brings many health benefits, develops confidence and gives them independence. Children who have been trained are much safer and, in addition, tend to cycle more. This training is being promoted by the Fareham Schools Sports Partnership and is being carried out by Pedal Power Training Ltd.

The training will take place during the week beginning Tuesday 31st May 2016 (Half Term), with sessions being run between 9am & 3pm for 4 days. They will need to complete one session per day for the whole week to try and achieve their Level 2. On day 1, an instructor will work with a group of children on the playground for 2 hours. They teach the children to do bike, helmet and clothing checks. They then carry out a range of fun exercises to check and develop their bike control skills. These skills are the Level 1 skills as laid out in the National Standards. Children must pass Level 1 in order to start the Level 2 training which takes place on local roads. Please note that not all riders will progress onto the level 2 course. Riders must be able to demonstrate to the instructor that they are safe enough to progress onto the road training. For those riders who they feel are not quite ready, they will explain to them where they need to improve to enable them to start the Level 2 training next time we are in school.

Session times are: Day 1 9am – 12:00pm or 12:30pm – 2:30pm. Rest of the week 9am – 10:30am, 10:30am – 12pm or 12:30pm – 2pm. If you have a preference as to which session times you would prefer, please state this on the returned consent form available to download below. Please note however that we cannot guarantee preferred session times if numbers applying are high. You will be sent a letter informing you of your child’s session times prior to the course starting. All successful applicants will need to be dropped off and collected from the main playground.

Please complete and the return the form below by Monday 16th May 2016. UNFORTUNATELY, FORMS RECEIVED AFTER THIS DATE CANNOT BE CONSIDERED.
If you would like to take up the offer of cycle training but need to arrange for use of a bike and/or helmet, then it may be possible to borrow a bike and/or helmet from Pedal Power Training. Please note the minimum seat height of our bikes is 750mm.

Your child will need the following for all their course sessions:

 A bike which is roadworthy and the correct size (a bike check will be carried out on the first day and any bike which is not roadworthy will have to be fixed for your child to continue on the course).
 A cycle helmet (which must again be of the correct size and fit properly)
 Sufficient warm clothing including gloves (sessions are between 1 and 2 hours and are outside). High visibility jackets are provided.
 Some wet weather clothing e.g. a shower or waterproof jacket as a minimum and preferably some over trousers. The training will continue in light to moderate rain but will be suspended if there is a heavy downpour.
I do hope you will register your child for this training and look forward to receiving your completed form.
Yours sincerely,
Sue Marsh
