Junior Rock Challenge 2017—Friday 17th February 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

Junior Rock Challenge 2017—Friday 17th February 2017

It’s with great excitement that we’re about to embark on our 4th Rock Challenge entry!

We first entered the competition in 2011 and have taken part every alternate year since then. It’s a huge project which brings together a large part of the school community, with many months of hard work culminating in a full day of rehearsals and the final performance at Southampton Guildhall. I’m sure everyone who has taken part previously would agree that the competition provides an amazing opportunity for the children to perform on a professional stage in front of a massive audience. It provides one of those magical, unforgettable experiences that will stay with them forever.

This year’s competition will take place on Friday 17th February. Your child will spend the whole day at Southampton Guildhall until the end of the performance at about 9pm. Please make sure that your child is able to stay for the evening before deciding whether your child can take part. The competition is to create an original dance/drama performance, no longer than 8 minutes, set to music. The entries are always of a very high standard, and several months of hard work, dedication, and weekly rehearsals are required.

Rehearsals for this year’s entry will start on Thursday 16th September, straight after school until 4.30pm, and will then continue every term-time Thursday after school until the performance.

The cost to enter the competition is £15 per child. The school has to pay this money to the Rock Challenge organisation in order to secure our place—please enclose £15 cash or a cheque payable to Beechwood Junior School with the slip below and return to the school office ASAP. We will have to limit the number of children taking part to 60—last time the places were all taken by 9am on the day after the letter went home.

The group of teachers and support staff who are part of the production team will need a considerable amount of help from parents with jobs such as: fund raising, making scenery and props, and making costumes. We need to raise at least £1000 to cover the costs of materials for the set, costumes, and make-up so we will definitely by asking for your help. Please bear in mind that tickets for the show at the Guildhall cost £12 each last time.

Yours sincerely

Jill Gardner
