As you are no doubt aware, the children had a very exciting start to the year with the addition of the school dog Winston. He is currently settling in well and slowly managing to make it around the school to see all of the children, attending staff meetings and getting involved with assemblies.
From the 19th September onwards, children will have the opportunity to walk Winston at lunchtime if they wish. The walk will always be supervised by an adult and will involve walking either around the perimeter of the school or along the closest residential roads such as Juniper Road, Glenfield Avenue or Huntly Way. Initially, the walk will be led by the adult but as Winston becomes more familiar with being walked on the lead, children may be allowed to hold his lead whilst out. As part of learning about responsible pet ownership, children will be responsible for duties such as clearing up after him if he goes to the toilet. As is the case within the school, all children will be required to wash their hands after coming into contact with Winston.
Class teachers will be responsible for choosing the children who are allowed to accompany Winston on his walk and this will be based on their overall behaviour and attitude towards their learning.
All necessary risk assessments have been carried out in school with regard to Winston and the children walking him but if you would not like your child to walk him at lunchtime, please inform the school office.
