We have decided to develop an Outdoor Learning Zone using an area of woodland on Glenfield Infant School’s grounds. There is a lot of research supporting how spending time in a natural environment helps to develop children’s independence, resilience and risk management. The Year 4 children will be taking part in five Wednesday afternoon sessions over this, our trial year.
As the sessions will run in almost all weathers, including the rain, we will supply the children with a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and wellington boots for the sessions and parents will be asked to supply a change of comfortable clothes that can get muddy.
Each afternoon session will involve everyone getting kitted up and ready to go, walking to Glenfield carrying the equipment and water we will need for the session, taking part in a woodland activity, having a drink of water and a biscuit, having free time to explore the natural space, playing a group game and walking back to Beechwood for the end of the day.
We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity and hope to be able to extend it to more children eventually.
