Year 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back, we hope you had restful Christmas break!. We’ve had a fantastic first term together in Year 6 with so many highlights ranging from creating out own fairy tales, team building within residential week and taking on the challenge of making delicious scones. We are very proud of how hard the children have already worked, and how enthusiastic they have been about the wide range of topics we have been learning about.

We have another exciting term ahead. We have already started out exciting history topic considering the causes and consequences of World War Two. In PSHE, we will be looking at the importance of free speech and how to respectfully express opinions. We will also be looking at evolution and inheritance in both animals and human as part of science. In art, we will be exploring with sketching using a variety of media. The children will also have the opportunity to use computers to manipulate images.

In Spring 2, we will switch back to our DT topic and focusing on drawing, printing and sculpting. We will also be returning to the geography topic of globalisation where the children will have the opportunity to build on their previous knowledge of trade. In RE, we will be exploring the concept of resurrection within the context of Christianity.

If you would like to see the full list of wider curriculum topics we will be covering, please follow the link below for the school’s website.

Curriculum – Beechwood Junior School

Our P.E. days will remain on Wednesday and then Thursday (Goodall and Irwin class) or Friday (Attenborough class) this term. Please remember that on our PE days children need to come in wearing PE kit that consists of a plain colour t-shirt and dark coloured bottoms. If you child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back on these days.

A date for your diary, on Monday 11th March 2024 we will be having a Y6 SATs meeting for parents to attend. We will talk about how you can best support your child ahead of the statutory tests in May. The meeting will be held twice to enable as many of you as possible to attend. The first session will be at 3.45pm in the school hall and the second at 5pm. The meeting should last around half an hour.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

The Year 6 Team

Science: Light

Find an experiment that you can complete a home to display your understanding of how light travels.

You could:

-Explore how light effects shadows

-How light moves through water

-What direction light moves in

Plan, record and take a photo (if possible) of your experiment. We look forward to seeing all of your results.
